Who is a Wormtongue in Calvary Temple-land? The ones who seek to keep people divided from their own flesh and blood, and spouses. The nice folks who help us out, sit close to us in church when we are so sad. Who hold our hands so we cannot reach out to a destroyed member of the family. Who whisper sweet nothings in our deceived ears:
- God is your husband now, shun that rebellious mate who opposes pastor. Call me if you need anything!
- Place your children on the altar and let God have them, as you toss them coldly into the street with nothin’. Remember Abraham!
- Do not answer your mother’s/father’s calls. You need to trust God with them. After all, who is your mother/father but he that does the will of God. I will stand in for them, and be a mother/father to you!
- Shhh. Don’t talk to your parents about what we discuss in youth group. Call us if they ever hint at wanting to leave our church, we will help keep you safe! Many are falling away from God, look how many good Christians from here already have! Don’t be one of them, there is wisdom in the multitude of counsel, [actually only ours].
Ohhhh, and Grima says it so nicely too! “He’s not welcome!” “Ill News is and Ill Guest!” “He’s a herald of woe! Don’t listen to him!” “Why should I welcome you…Stormcrow?!” Ahh, gotta love Gandalf’s response: “Be silent! Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I have not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm!” Great lines. Quite a few of us here should memorize these and use them the next time someone sits next to us in church and whispers their words of sweet division.
But God says, “Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple” (Romans 16:17-18). “And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?” (Luke 12:14). “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God” (James 3:8-9). “They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders ‘poison is under their lips. Selah” (Psalms 140:3).
